Dating

Dating has been around for many centuries, as a way for a man and a woman to get to know one another. The primary purpose of dating is for both partners to preview and get to know a possible marriage partner. Traditionally there has been a bit of a stigma attached to dating, as people were a bit sceptical to date anyone, thinking that by asking someone out on a date, or accepting an invitation to go on a date meant that this would undoubtedly lead to marriage. While yes those who marry usually start out by dating, this does not mean that all those who date, end up being married.

Dating today (as in years gone by) may include one or more social activities such as:

  • Going out to dinner
  • Going to a movie
  • Going to a concert or the theatre to watch a live show

Of course a date does not have to incur a huge cost. Dates might also include something simple such as:

  • Walking along the beach together
  • Meeting for a picnic in a park

The main benefits of dating are to enable both parties to spend time together to get to know each other.

Mostly in western society, dates are mutually arranged by both parties, however in some cultures, dates are arranged by another person. This person might be a family member, friend or sometimes even a person who works professionally as a matchmaker. Some well meaning friends or siblings sometimes set up someone on a “blind date” where the third party arranges a date for the two people to get together to meet for the first time.

It has long been recognised that in the long term, it is unnecessary for young teens to date one-on-one until at least the age of sixteen. Teens need to work on their ability to develop healthy friendships with members of the opposite sex without the pressure of being in a one-on-one dating situation. One way they can achieve this is to take part in group dating situations where a whole group of them might go out somewhere or enjoy time together at someone’s home.

For those struggling to meet someone to arrange a date, they might consider using an online dating service or take part in speed dating.

Whatever your choice, happy dating!
